The Backgarden of the Mind
Backgarden of the Mind is a mixed-media eco-print painting depicting a panoramic view of a backyard filled with cascading crepe myrtles and English ivy, teamed with grounds brimming with plants abundant with blooming flowers. As the title hints, the painting is an analogy to how our brain functions. As with a garden, a mind that is not tended will grow unruly. In addition, we reap what we sow in the mind and the garden. If we allow negative thoughts to enter without much abate or mindfulness, then it has the potential to take away or overrun our more beautiful and compassionate thoughts. As such, a diligent and competent Gardner would regularly take out weeds to allow what is considered beneficial and attractive in the garden to grow unimpeded.
The spent poppy heads with their long and willowy stems which feature prominently are meant to evoke the appearance of synapses of the brain that play a vital role in memory formation, beliefs and habits through our own thoughts and society's collective agreements.
With time and attention, we could train the neurons in our brains connected by these synapses to fire and rewire together to enlighten us rather than trap us in an eternal loop of suffering. As they say, neurons that fire together wire together. In other words, with some attention, we can all foster a beautiful, engaging, and compassionate mind, just like this garden, which grows gorgeous with each passing day!
How to care for your Art work
Please note that for the protection of the paintings, each piece is sealed with multiple layers of artist-quality matte fixative. Given the texture of the cotton canvas used and the fixative, rest assured that the soft pastel pigment will last for generations.
As with any fine art, utmost care must be taken when handling, displaying, and storing the artwork. Please avoid displaying or storing the pieces in direct sunlight or very humid conditions. When displayed, place the artwork in indirect sunlight and keep the humidity low in tropical climates whenever possible to ensure the best conservation practices. Additionally, if storing or transporting artworks, ensure they are not kept in very humid environments for extended periods.
Dharshi avoids using fugitive pigments when possible. However, if a fugitive pigment is used, which may fade slightly over time, this is considered part of the overall message and living quality of the artwork. The message, authenticity, and overall visual identity of the piece will not diminish as a result of any fading of fugitive pigments.
Please note that eco prints and dyes are known to fade primarily when exposed to variations in pH, typically occurring when the cloth is washed over time. However, since these works are on stretched canvases, this issue will not occur with eco print paintings.
