The Southern Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) is an endangered species of whale that migrates along the coastlines of Australia and is an important part of Aboriginal folklore. In aboriginal culture the whale is associated with the creation of the sea and the coastlines. The whale's songs are said to be the voices of the ancestors, singing their stories and passing on their knowledge.
The whale's massive size and strength are seen as a symbol of power and protection.
Dharshi chose to focus on the eye of the whale, the eye being the window to ones soul! If the viewer in some way is able to connect to these creatures as equals, then Dharshi believes that we will all do at least one single thing to protect these animals in our lives. To protect sea creatures such as this magnificent being, we could all raise our voice in unison to stop the slaughter of whales by humans.
Dharshi accomplished something remarkable - she completed two 30-day art challenges in a single year! During this time, she created more than 60 artworks, including 30 pieces featuring endangered species. Among these works is this piece showcasing an endangered species. The original watercolour was painted on 100% cotton paper using the highest quality watercolours available.
