The Burrunan dolphin (Tursiops australis) is a species of dolphin found in the coastal waters of southeastern Australia and is an important part of Aboriginal folklore in the region. Sadly, however, we are called to protect these species as it is considered an endangered species in Australia!
In the Boon Wurrung people's stories of the Melbourne region, the dolphin is associated with the creation of the Yarra River and the land around it. The dolphin is also seen as a symbol of protection, guidance, and good luck in some Aboriginal cultures. The Gunditjmara people of Victoria) believe that the dolphin is associated with the spirit world and is said to carry the spirits of the dead to the afterlife.
Such as this artwork depicts the playful and social behavior of the dolphin is seen by the aboriginal people to be a symbol of community, family, and connection to country.
In some Aboriginal stories, the dolphin is associated with the Rainbow Serpent, a powerful ancestral being depicted in one of Dharshi’s early works.
Dharshi accomplished something remarkable - she completed two 30-day art challenges in a single year! During this time, she created more than 60 artworks, including 30 pieces featuring endangered species. Among these works is this piece showcasing an endangered species. The original watercolour was painted on 100% cotton paper using the highest quality watercolours available. This piece is sized to fit an IKEA frame of 320x320 or can be custom mounted by Kevin at Make Design in Frankston.
