The Australian Endangered Species the Numbat (Myrmecobius fasciatus) is a species of termite-eating marsupial found in Western Australia, and is an important part of Aboriginal folklore in the region. The Noongar people of Southwest Western Australia believe that the Numbat is associated with the creation of the world and the first sunrise. The Numbat's distinctive beautiful stripes are said to represent the colours of the rainbow, and its ability to find termites is seen as a symbol of wisdom and knowledge. Like many of the other other animals on the endangered list, featured in Dharshi’s artworks, the Numbat is also associated with the Dreamtime, and its movements are said to have created the rivers and waterways of the region.

Like with Dharshi’s dhirrie collection where the rug acts as a trope which symbolise the idea of protection, the Numbat is also associated as symbol of protection and warning. The Numbat’s distinctive call is believed to alert other animals to potential dangers. Further enhancing this animals magical associations in folklore, in some Aboriginal stories, the Numbat is associated with the Moon and is said to have helped create the stars in the night sky.

Dharshi accomplished something remarkable - she completed two 30-day art challenges in a single year! During this time, she created more than 60 artworks, including 30 pieces featuring endangered species. Among these works is this piece showcasing an endangered species. The original watercolour was painted on 100% cotton paper using the highest quality watercolours available.
