Studies: A Garden Evening for Gifted & Talented Sri Lankan Children

A first look at Dharshi de Silva's Studies, over twenty small experimental works spanning three years of testing technique. A sit-down evening in Dharshi's own garden, Sri Lankan hopper feast with wine included, every dollar raised going to gifted and talented underprivileged children in Sri Lanka.

About the event

Before a painting is resolved, it's tested. Studies is the first public showing of that testing ground: more than twenty small works made across three years, each one a technique pushed, a material tried, a question asked before the answer arrived.

The collection moves through five distinct periods. Nine works made for Hoo Gallery's opening exhibition in February 2024, testing eco-print alongside encaustic, dripped and textured rather than smoothly layered. Poppies on eco-printed linen, bright and graphic in one group, heavier and native-toned in another. Genesis 1, 2 and 3, testing a quark ground on canvas. And the most recent works, made using tataki-zome, a Japanese technique of hammering botanical pigment directly into the surface.


Some of what was learned here carries directly into the paintings you already know. Some remains its own thing entirely.
